Boosting Before Distortion?

I'm thinking of getting a T-Rex Moller Overdrive to use on top of my amps distortion, and it also has a boost function that I'd use for solos. Would the boost footswitch raise the volume, or just increase the gain because it's boosting the signal before the amps' distortion?

(It'd also be used as a standalone overdrive pedal for a non-metal band)

Nice sig! :D

I don't have that pedal, so take this with a grain of salt.

Boost pedals in general add volume until an amp's headroom is spent, after which it indeed adds saturation to the dirt. So basically, if you're running your amp cranked, then it will add to that distortion rather than boost the overall volume.

From how it looks set up in the pic, the boost appears able to increase the gain on the Moller's OD side as well.

I should add that if your amp has an effects loop, that you could put a boost there for solos, as long as your power tube headroom is not spent.
