Wooly Mammoth problem

So I was setting up a new bass board and wanted to run my 442 red filter in front of my Mammoth. No go, 442 after mammoth works fine but before it's barely audible. Anyway around this problem or is this just the nature of the beast thing? It's an old Wooly Mammoth, I've had it for about 7 years. I know alot of germanium fuzzes like to be first but for some reason I did not think this was one of the Mammoth's qwerks. Do I just have to live with the fuzz before the filter?
