Well, there are 3 versions of the large box.

1) '77-'81 - middle knob labeled "tone"

2) '81-'83 - middle knob labeled "filter"

On real vintage pedals, there are no white dots around the knobs and NO battery door - you have to take the pedal apart to change the 9V. Easy to tell them apart from the re-issue.

3) ??? - Vintage re-issue, white dots around the knobs, battery hatch.

More detail here.

If you want to know the year, you'll have to read the pots and date it that way. I haven't seen a serial # => date calculator for Rats.

From that description (and the info on the site) I'd say the pedal I have is an '81-'83...but it HAS white dots.

Now I'm just confused.

I love my Rat. Best dirt pedal I've owned.

Early 90's big-box Rat modded to the tits.

Wait...is THIS the one that was on those Thrice clips?

Here is my '82 ProCo Rat:

If yours has white dots, it was made in the '90s and is a re-issue, not an actual vintage Rat. You can also tell from the "Sound Inc" next to the ProCo logo. If yours has no battery door on the back, and you're thinking it may be some kind of hodge-podge or Franken-Rat, this is the guts of my '82:

edit - Also, FWIW, my early small box Rat is an '83 white face. It's serial # starts RT-020xxx My '82 starts RT-019xxx, so that could possibly help if your # is much higher.

Then it MUST be a reissue. Mine has no battery door, it has an EHX-style power adapter plugin. It does, however, have a bigass open space in the back (which must have been where the battery door WAS) and an LM308.

How come there weren't any large box RI's listed in that link?

There is. It's just below Rat 2, a bit further down the table. The bigass open space is 100% the battery space. It's common for the doors to be missing as they were just fit in w/ tabs and a little thumb screw.

More Rat porn, my '82 & '83 together:

This to me, is good news.

It means that if I decide to do a mod similar to Tom's, I won't be de-valuing a sought-after vintage pedal. And, frankly, I really need an LED. :idk:

Doesn't change the fact that this thing ALREADY breathes fire.

I'll get some pics of my rat up tomorrow.

I love mine. Got it recently from a forumite. It was actually bowed/convex from being jumped on. Never seen that before. Once I beat it back into shape, it was ready for more stomping. Quite different from my '82, more gnarly/dirty, less clear when used as a fat boost. My buddy has a later small box with the flip-flopped logo that is very similar to my '83. I used to have a Turbo that I modded w/ an LM308 and it was also very good, but different. I love Rats.

Agree'd 100%. As long as you paid a fair price, it's a total win. I love my '82, but I know I sometimes grab other pedals 'cuz I'm too chicken to beat it up like it deserves. I hope to get over that one day and use it like I should. Only reason I've ever considered selling it. If I went to eBay, it'd be gone in a second, but thankfully folks here are cheap. ;)

IMO, the Vintage Rat re-issue is one of the best mod platforms you could hope for - lots of real-estate to work with.

I traded a cool pedal that's fairly inexpensive for it (

ze{censored}izat?

Rat with adjustable Ruetz mod - top knob.

Switchable clipping - none, symmetrical silicon diodes (stock), asymmetrical silicon diodes, LED, or mosfet + germanium diodes.

Switchable op-amp clipping (aka "Turbo Rat") - none, silicon diodes, germanium+mosfet or LED.

The originals are in a much larger enclosure, but I built that one in a daphon delay enclosure as some kind of {censored}ed up sado-masochistic experiment.
