Members Bonus
Happy Christmas folks, I know people are mad into VST's and all that lark but i have a drum machine, sampler and synth (all hardware) and im planning to make songs that way, with as little or no software if possible. I prefer doing stuff through harware (im not sure why). Im very familiar with computers and specialise in audio but im more a fan of pure hardware. What are views on this for writing songs, (electronica stuff mainly). I also have a guitar, bass so i can sample all the stuff using hardware. : D? Just wondering how many of you write stuff without software?Cheers
Members Allerian
Lotta hardware people here. I generally sequence up my melody and build from there. The core of my setup is the Elektron Monomachine, which I use to control everything else.
Members Tony Scharf
Everyone has their own opinions. If it works for you, and you are productive with it - that is all that matters. For *years* I had a "NO SOFTWARE" rule - I wrote everything using hardware. Eventually, I caved and got a DAW. For certain things, it was just far more convenient. Today I use a mix of each - I use Ableton Live mainly and Cubase but still have a fairly large hardware rig. Few VSTs have caught on with me, and I tend to use them more sparingly than I do my hardware (the NI plugins being the exceptions - particularly reaktor). With a large setup, the PC helps me glue everything together. Ive tried to go back to hardware only setups, but it just doesnt work for me the way it used to. Members Bonus
Sound lads, Ahh im new enough to all this lark, have been playing drums and guitar for near 10 years and some bass to. I might just use protools to edit cuase im doing that in college anyway and garageband. What do bands like Justice use to make thier stuff i know its alot of sample based stuff.Thats kind of the direction id like to go towards, im a big fan of mellow electr5onica aswell like Make love and emotion by daft punk. Members Allerian
Seems like you've got everything you need to do what you're describing. More a matter of just getting to it. What specific hardware are you using and what has held you back so far?

Members Cygnus64
Just wondering how many of you write stuff without software?Cheers Are you talking about recording music, or composing it? I often compose music in my head while driving. At home, I use the piano. For recording I use Sonar. I use vsts for Drums (EZdrummer), and the occasional synth lead (Pro53, etc). I use Kontakt on occasion. The majority of my synth stuff is from romplers.
Members Bonus
Ahh right cool. I meant composing sorry . What sort of stuff are you into yourself? Sometimes i listen to a beat and base the whole song around 2 or 3 beats with fills.
Members Cygnus64
Ahh right cool. I meant composing sorry . What sort of stuff are you into yourself? I do classical crossover music and fusion stuff. Sometimes i listen to a beat and base the whole song around 2 or 3 beats with fills. I do similiar at times. I will find a patch on a synth and the patch literally writes the song.

Members Khazul
Have a look at Ableton live - yeh - its software along with the usual software baggage etc, but its a fairly clean UI, easy to map for direct hardware control as well. Members bruto
I love hardware synths, but I prefer to sequence the midi equiped ones with a computer, usually Cakewalk, but sometimes other programs.
