Members tim gueguen
If all you want to do is play the sound making programs on your computer all you need is a basic MIDI controller. The Fantom is a complete synth and would be overkill if all you want to do is play softsynths on your computer.
Members Birdienumnum
Of course, a real synth is far more inspiring . . . I would have both in my arsenal. For a MIDI controller, I would choose a Novation Remote 61 SL. Well, I'm happy with mine . . . the drum pads are small and hard but work surprisingly well, and you can't beat the Automapping. The keybed and aftertouch are excellent, IMO. If you don't need a keyboard, I would choose a controller with larger, nicer drum pads. Or an Akai MPC or an old E-mu command station would provide great pads and sounds, without the keyboard, and would be more stimulating than just a controller. The Roland is great, tho.
