Members badtoneno
I'm one who goes for a mixture of power and preamp tube distortion. Most of the low wattage amps I've played start to get really blatty when the power section is really cranked. On top of that, few have enough low end for me. I'm not one of these death metal chuggers that hangs around here either, I'm basically a classic rock guy and use way less gain than most on this forum. A lot also has to do with the type of tube. I haven't played many of the small EL84 amps that I really liked, mainly due to the low end thing. It's feels like you have 4 1/2 strings on the guitar to me. Maz, you're right- a SS amp doesn't compare to tubes, even when you're not cranked that much. I'll take a good MV amp over these low watters any day of the week. I'd be willing to bet if you blindfold test people with the big amp turned down and the little amp cranked at the same db volume, most people are going to pick the big amp. It just sounds BIGGER!
