A fighter is a P-51, F-16, F-15, F-22 (ftw), etc... The F-14 was built to intercept long range Russian bombers. It was never intended to "dogfight" other aircraft (such as the Su-27 or the MiG-29). "Air superiority" in a since that it can take out it's opponents from 90 miles away. ...which would make it an interceptor, and not a fighter.
