Members rlm297
What synths did The Cars use on "Just What I Needed"?The tone for the first synth lead is unreal. Any ideas?
Members soundxplorer
It sounded like a Minimoog to me, that was my guess. But apparently this is the correct answer: http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/mini700s.php
Members Gribs
I'm not surprised it was a mini-Moog. My brother number 2 (me being 1) used a Yamaha CS-15 to replicate the sound pretty well in our junior high / high school band
Members eric
Nope, Greg Hawkes did not use a Minimoog. "Just What I Needed" lead was played on a Mini-Korg. His other keyboards during that era included Vox Continental, Prophet 5, ARP Omni, Yamaha CP30.

Members xmlguy
Which artsy guitar picks did the Cars use on "Just What I Needed"? I'm pretty sure that's what I need to get their sound. It could be the strings or the guitar straps, too, but I think the picks are the mojo to their magic sound. If that doesn't work, I'll try the sunglasses. Somebody suggested portable mentos, but I don't like the fresh makers.
Members augerinn
Wow, and I always thought it was classic P5 osc-synch. One of my all time favorite albums, their first one is. Moving in Stereo, and All Mixed up are the perfect closers, and EPIC to boot.

Are you thinking of "Let's Go"?The sound on "Just What I Needed" doesn't sound like it has any osc-sync to me.
Members mikael488
The ARP Omni is all over The Cars' first album, esp "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Moving in Stereo". The latter one is like a demo for the Omni I.

Members ramkeys
obviously, left-hand picks were used to disguise the actual fingering

Members polar69
I always wondered about the opening sequencing on "heartbeat city"
Members tim gueguen
The opening synth sounds are from a Roland GR300 guitar synth played by Elliot Easton. The sequenced stuff is either Fairlight CMI via its own sequencer or Roland Jupiter 8 played by a Roland MC4

Members evildragon
LOL, no. English sixpence was what Brian May used instead of pick. Arjen Anthony Lucassen uses a dutch 5 cent coin instead of pick.

You know, I don't mean to jump on you BUT....while I can't speak for guitar straps, guitar picks do drastically change the sound of a guitar. While I understand your point and its intended sarcasm, I'm not sure why you are making it. LouLoomis

While I understand your point and its intended sarcasm, I'm not sure why you are making it. Many, if not most, analog-style synth sounds used by bands can be easily done on most any analog or virtual analog synth. There are exceptions, of course, but they are not the rule. So I'm making light fun of the notion of buying the same gear of any band to "get their XYZ sound on ABC song", particularly when the sound nearly always happens to be something simple like a saw wave with portamento. I just used the example of "artsy guitar picks" because I liked that part of the OP sig, I like cool picks too, even though the analogy wasn't entirely parallel.
