Members snakum
I'm thinking of all the bizarre experiments I can perform on my poor amplifier, and I'm thinking of this ... Replace the Sovtek 6L6s with JJ 6V6s for less wattage, and going to JJ 12AT7 preamp tubes to cut the rather prodigious preamp gain. This way I can turn the 'A-A/B' switch to use primarily one of the 6V6s then crank the power section till the tube(s) start to yield that warm, fat, dynamic grind that only glowing power tubes can give up. And the 12AT7s will knock down some of the preamp gain, leaving a higher percentage of the gain to come from the power section. Whattaya think? Do'able? Any downside that I'm not aware of? Members ECFan
I'd go with a NOS RCA 12AY7 rather that the 12AT7. This will give you a little better control over the gain and probably a better tone. A 5751 (aka the SRV tube) would be another good tube to try.
