After 20 years... I think my days with Korg gear onstage are numbered.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing. After I took my jaw off the floor I thought of this thread.

Grant, it's too bad the 61 isn't coming til later, but DUDE! What a monster this synth is gonna be. The inconvenience (Even if you have to perch it on the wall hooked up via midi) might be worth it.

I had a nut saved up for a REALLY nice recording microphone, but this is making me change gears. I'm 98% sure it's gonna be all it's cracked up to be. If it's priced reasonably, good chance I'll get it myself as soon as it's available and sell the M50 in addition to making it my master board unseating the Motif XS (Which I've been praising soundwise the last 2 years) to being my "2nd" board. Based on what I'm reading (Including projected MAP) and seeing in the demos, I'm psyched!

On another note that's CRAZY how your board died HOURS before a big gig like that. I would have been flippin too for my New Year's Gig! Glad to hear you got a solution for the day and it worked out.

Thanks Wes... my other keyboard player loaned me his M3m (he's borrowing my Traynor K4, XP30) to cover some gigs until the Extreme comes home. I'm hoping the M3m will fit the bill... even if I can't rack it... just as a sound source for 80% of what I need. The brass is a sore spot... but again, we're not playing entire sets of soul and funk music. To me having something with some, thick, wall of sound synth patch creation is just as important as having decent piano and brass. We're playing so much K104 material these days that anything anemic sounding is just a let down. It's an area that Tritons in general just shined.

KRONOS does look exciting. It's as I suspected... the M3 was basically a place holder. Nothing wrong with it... it improved in some areas (KARMA inclusion, performance pads, extra poly) even if the soundset lacks in certain areas (brass notably). So I may save my pennies for it and bypass an M3 for the home and get the KRONOS as my main studio piece down the road. For you in the wedding band... it would be awesome!!!!

I think your selling it short man. Believe it or not, when we do clubs half our set list is K104. Here's a sample of what we do:

Rhianna: Only girl in the world, Please don't stop the Music

Lady Gaga: Just dance, Poker Face, Alejandro

Katy Perry: California Girls

Inrique Iglesias: I Like it

Taio Cruz: Break Your Heart

Flo-Rida Club Can't Handle me

Usher: DJ Got us falling in Love

BEP: I gotta Feelin

David Guetta: Sexy Chick, No Getting over you

Beyonce: All the single Ladies

Cascada: Evacuate the Dance Floor

Ke$ha: Tik-Tok, Take it Off

And that's just stuff from the past year!

This stuff DOES need aggressive textures, and I am DROOLING over those Analog Synth Engines. Some of the Demos are positively wicked! To the point where I might not want for a VA. I put a LOT of time into nailing the album tones and I think the Kronos will even surpass the Motif XS in this regard. I hear ya on the horns being junk on the M Series synths. In your situation I'd get an XS Rack for that, though you said you don't use horns a lot. To this point the Motif had the best brass to my ears. Dont' know if the Kronos is better but it would fit the bill. Be a slam dunk no brainer if the M3M is rackable. I say pray for a Rack version Kronos to be announced!

Very similar setlist... mostly in medley style. I definately have to make it out and catch a club gig in Newburgh or the area. Our goal as a rock band is not to capture the style of the song... but certainly recreate the energy. The Triton handled that aggression perfectly. Quick question... which board are you using for those 'aggressive textures'... the M50 or the XS. Again our other Keyboardist is using the original Motif rack and I'm amazed at the raw, VA bright tones he's creating with that box. It's funny he's perfectly comfortable programming Yammie gear where I'm schooling him on Korg's editing workflow and FX system.

The great thing about having Richie (2nd Keys) aboard playing keys is that we can split parts and thicken them just in the textures and sound pallets we use on stage. We cover CeeLo "{censored} You" and he's covering piano and organ and I've got vibes and brass covered. Same thing with a Grease medley we play... he's covering piano and organ and I'm filling in brass and some extra percussion. It just fills everything out and smooths the edges.

I just sent the KRONOS video to my other keys player and he's drooling. Who knows one of us may spring for it and use it in the band in a few months. ;)

Hey man, it'd be great to see you out. If you come to the Newburgh show, just make sure you don't come out til at LEAST 11:00-11:30 PM. We play REALLY tame stuff the 1st hour. A buddy of mine came early once and had to split before we could get to the good stuff and was disappointed because we do more the "wedding thing" when we start. What's more, now everyone he knows that I know who hasn't seen us is gonna think we're lame now (Ain't that the way?) And it took him 2 years to find time to come out, so no redemption there anytime soon. We wait for the club to fill up before we hit em hard. ;)

9 Times out of 10 it's the XS that's doing the aggressive textures. I swear I think half the songs on the radio are Motif Presets! The M50 I use for arps and tap tempo stuff mainly. It's also my slapstick percussion and (built-in) sample player. XS is getting tap tempo with the next update (FINALLY), so that will be one more nail in the coffin for the M50 rigwise.

Funny we do C-Lo's song too! Of course we do the "Forget you" version. LOL. I'll have to go back and listen for the Vibes and Horns. Generally I cover Piano, Choir, and Organ for that song. I'm hoping to get the girl singer an octopad and expand her percussion selection, but we'll see. Would also be great as drum triggers for the club tunes.

Yeah the Kronos looks sick. The only thing that's gonna kinda blow (for me) is now I'll have TWO large keyboards on stage. 76 Key up top and 73 Weighted on the bottom. Though since the Korg has REAL controller abilities (The Motif Series are PITIFUL as a controllers) I can FINALLY start using MIDI again which will open up things a LOT for me flexibility wise.

Hey speakin of gigging, what are you using for cases? I've been trying to use the lightweight cases (Souped up gig bags) and they just fall apart in a few months. Been trying to avoid full on cases because of the weight.

ATA all the way. It's extra money and extra weight but it really does protect the gear for the long haul. Our stuff gets throw around a little in the van and trailer. I always try to transport it but sometimes 'extra hands get tehre before me. Especially heavier boards like the Triton, Fantoms. I found it was better to spend $200-350 on a case built like a Sherman tank than $150 on a semi-soft that would desinergrate after 50+ shows. The case I have for the Triton I got here on HC... it was almost brand new (even still had the rice packets)... I think it's an SKB ATA style. It has velcro straps keep it secure which I'm not always a fan of. Weighs 23lbs on it's own so combined with the Triton and a few mic stands I'm able to store inside it's a hefty 60lbs. It destroyed my 'band car' so much transporting it my wife has forbade me to ever put it in the 'new car'. :D

For a while I was using the 'rock n roller' carts for places with long load ins... Monticello Casino and Gully's (you know those hauls ;) )... but half of the time on an incline, I was fighting the gear to stay on the cart. Now I just roll them in on casters.

Weight is certainly an issue... which was again the reason I started this thread.

I don't know why you don't buy a Muse receptor and use your AX-synth or any other lightweight controller. There are various sound bundles you can buy the Receptor pre-configured with, and it's hard for me to believe that one of these absolutely MASSIVE pre-installed, already up and running sound sets wouldn't fit all of your needs. That you can't easily use all plugsins is a limitation, but every system has limitations- but in my book anyway, if you've got killer va's, organ clones, awesome eps, and large format rompler samples in one bundled package, how much more do you need anyway?

I was wondering the same thing. This is the setup I have and I love it - and my Receptor is a crappy original one.

Hey Grant remember me?

While I gather the AX-Synth alone would not fit your needs for a controller, you can add some other MIDI controller to get the amount of flexibility you need.

My whole setup (including a power conditioner) fits in a 4-U case and my keytar bag.
