Members Riff
It helps to understand a little theory. The progession C-F-G is called I IV V in the key of C. That is, it is the first, fourth and fifth chords in that key. Many, many popular songs have been written based on this progression. Here is the whole key of C major:I - Cii - Dmiii - EmIV - FV - Gvi - Amvii - Bm dimAn easy way to spice it up is to use some of the minor chords. You'll find that the ii chord (Dm) is an easy substitute for the IV chord--since they only differ by one note. You can also add 7ths. Often in popular music, you'll find the use of the iii to add a 7th (Em7, in this case). It adds a little extra flavor. The other thing is to try to vary where the chord changes happen. If you count out the beat 1-2-3-4, the most common thing is to change chords on the "1" beat. Why not experiment a little. Try not holding a chord for all four beats of the measure. Or hold one for six beats, and the next for two. Endless possibilities. Good luck,
