I'm no expert, but some ideas I can think of are: Use lots of power chords to create a 'full' and 'heavy' texture. Mix that up with some pinch harmonics, various atonal melodies and dissonant harmonies for the 'weirdness' effect. Many great songwriters are/were crappy guitar players. Leave the shredding jack-off crap to the folks who couldn't put one good verse next to one decent chorus in a thousand attempts if they tried.
