A buddy of mine is on a limited income. He wants a tube amp but has decided solidstate is his best option for multiple reasons...i tried to tell him about different tube amps/used amps etc....but...he's stubborn and wants to go solidstate....he wants to get a George Lynch like tone the best he can....He said he could spend about $500 total...he wants a head but he wants to buy wah pedal and other stuff as well....he has a 2x12 cab i think it's a marshall 1936 2x12...but anyway...what solidstate head would you guys recommend for getting as close as possible to Lynch tone of Dokken/Lynch Mob era....peavey?, randall?, marshall MG series? I told him i'd ask you guys!!!

THose Randall RG100's are pretty damn impressive for SS amps IMO. They're very Marshally sounding with a rattier top end. I think they take to boosts pretty well too, believe it or not!

The regular Line 6's Spiders Ive played have been horrible. But I havent played the III. I will say Id take that RG100 over the regular Spider.

You know, it may be worth looking into the Vox AD series... :idk:

thanks shea, i'll tell him to check into it...he also was asking about line 6 spider III's or Ibanez MIMX modellers...i didn't really know what to tell him...don't have any experience with either

I agree. Randall Rg 100ES with a boost out front will do that. I'm in the process of selling mine (cheap) but if the deal falls through I'll let ya know.

The Damage Control Solid Metal is $200 and is a 250v dual tube distortion pedal that covers the range of gain from 1982 to 2008. It sounds wonderful through my Randall. Destroys every dirt pedal I've ever had, and I've had all the good mass market ones at one time or another and one or two of the boutiques. You can get a Randall RG100ES for about $300, or a Randall RX120RH (current gen Randall solid state amp) for $300. If you have the choice between the two, pick the ES because it is a superior amp (I say as an owner of the RX120RH) but the RX120RH is voiced very similarly and is quite capable as well and takes a boost great. Tell him to stay away from the RG---G3 series as they've got some real problems (search my posts for my experience with two RG150G3 amps in a row with the same problems).

Only thing is, this assumes he has a cab already, which could be a bad assumption.

Remember that George Lynch's guitar tone is the result of massive studio tracking as well - he has as many as 8+ guitar rhythm tracks on some of the Dokken albums, and if I remember right his most complex guitar song has 28 total guitar tracks mixed into it. Don't let your friend fool himself into thinking he'll get that sound with one guitar and one amp.
