may put 6l6's in the 333xl today

Buying new tubes today. Got el34's in them which I prefer in most amps but I'm wondering what it'll sound like with 6l6's. Anyone done this? Big difference? Kinda wanna do it for that bottom end but I'm afraid I'll regret it. So I wanted to hear from someone else that's done it. Anyone moded a 5150 with el34's?

My 333 sounds much better with 6L6s than with EL34s IMO.

 

I don't know if its voiced differently than the 333XL, but I really like my 333 with 6L6s.

 

Current tube set in my 333:

JJ 6L6 Quad

V1 TungSol 5751

V2 TungSol 12AX7

V3 JJ ECC83 (12AX7)

PI JAN 12AT7

 

Clean boosting with a TS-808 always on.

 

Sounds awesome, especially when I think about I paid as much for the whole amp as I do just for a pair of modules for the Randall.

BTW the EL34s I tried in it were Winged C, so its not like they were bad tubes that made me dislike EL34s in it.

 

Also just for the record I've tried about every tube combination you can think of in the 333 and this is the best so far.

Yeah, over the years everything I've heard with el34's I usually liked better but I can't stand having something that can use the 6l6 and not knowing what it sounds like with them. The 333xl does sound a little different than the 333. I tried them both out before purchasing it. Could have just been the tube differences though. I'd like to put el34's in my 5150 but don't want to pay for the mod yet. Keep 6l6's in the 6505.

Well I'm not anti-EL34 by any means.

 

This amp just simply sounds best this way.

 

But so many things to be considered also, cab/speakers, guitar/pups, and the TS-808.
