Members Hagront
Apparently the ones after 76 are 135 watts. Does it change the tone much? What is the big difference in sound between them? Thanks
Members phyrexia
I'm not very knowledgeable about fender amps but I try not to spread bad info. I believe they switched to Ultralinear transformers after '76. From what I have gathered, it is possible to 'blackface' a 68-76, but not a 77-82. I'm sure someone will be able to confirm this info, but I think it's right...
Members Hagront
And what exactly do you mean by blackface it? And what difference does this ultralinear make to the sound?

Thanks I have one, a Silverface late 70's, 135 watts, It's called "ultralinear", means it doesn't break-up no matter how loud you go.Thats why the Blackface pre-CBS are more desirable because they have break-up when you push them. However, I run an amp modeler thru the front of my Twin and it's Tone to die for, or close, but it sounds very good, also can't beat it for cleans w/a Tele or Strat.Despite being a CBS era Fender, it's still Point to Point turret board wired and built like a Tank.:poke:
