Members bluesboy
Hi all, im pretty sure ill be getting a new laptop soon, and i want to recycle my old one. However, Id like to wipe the harddrive before sending it away. Are there some programs I can use to do this, or what is the best way? I want to make sure no one could somehow get credit card numbers, personal info, etc.
Members TearsOfTheDead
Even after a standard wipe, it is still possible to retrieve data from it. I would suggest a power drill a few times through it. If it's a laptop hard drive, the platters should be made of glass and a few taps of a hammer should shatter them. Members Rob Dobbs
there are programs that write zeros over the drive. If all else fails, electro magnet.
Members Harvest
The electromagnet thing doesn't work. Find a SOX-compliant disk wiping tool and use that, or physically destroy the drive/platters.
Members mbarn3065
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ This is free software! Set it for secure file deletion "Gutmann" (35 passes) and then run it a couple times. Then reformat your hard drive. That should do it.
