Members PolyFmorf
Anybody use wrist straps when handling ICs for DIY stompbox building? Or take any other steps?
Members Sir H C
At home no, at work yes. Here we have antistatic mats, connected to the ground of the electrical system (professionally done), wrist straps and all that. At home I just touch something metal to get the big charges off, and have had few if any problems. Most chips are designed to handle a sizable jolt, it is some of the discrete FETs that have the biggest problems. Also don't work on carpeted floors if you can help it, that is just a static mess. Members Gromit
You have to bear in mind that not all electronic devices are static sensitive. Its only really mosfets (and ICs that employ mosfet technology) that have the problem.
Members Marcus Dahl
I really don't, but I'm always touching metal and I live in a humid enviroment to. Static is a little different animal than ac or dc electricity. Sometimes a small static charge can pop a regular transistor or ic. I'm not sure of the specs. I'm sure AMZ would know. If I lived in a warmer/colder less humid enviroment, I'd take better precautions. You know, some place like Arizona or the upper part of Ohio.
