Members dsquared
Well... I finally put the finishing touches on the 5C1 champclone that I've been putting together. No cabinet yet, but I couldn't wait to fire it up so the ValveJr's speaker was enlisted. No smoke... that's a good thing. A bit of hum... I'll deal with it. But one thing: it sounds... nice. I've read about this design that it was a "real grinder", and "undecipherable levels of distortion at gut-wrenching levels". It's neither. There's some distortion going on at the end of the dial, but it's a pretty polite, quiet amp. Quieter than my ValveJr was before the OT swap. My build is faithful(ish... safety first) to the original schem. I used a Hammond 270CAX PT, and the old ValveJr OT. It's not like it sounds bad or anything... but either I was expecting the wrong thing, or something ain't right here. Anyone with any insights? Members Guttermouth
it could be a couple of things - posting a gutshot might shed some light on things. that being said - champs don't get super distorted. you should be getting classic rock type tones out of it stock (think free or derek and the dominos amounts of gain)
