I've replaced some TL072's with TLE2072's (Excalibur) in a Crate V5 but didn't pay enough attention to realize if they made a difference. I suppose it depends on the application in a circuit, but what are some of the "best" sounding op amps that you've tried? I would guess that the technical factors are low noise and fast processing, but I don't know anything. I just read up a bit on modding amps recently and found a BillM page that mentioned 5532's and 2132's, and google leads to all kinds of others. On a side note, I figure what makes an amp sound cleaner wouldn't work as well in boost pedals? There's a cool thread on that forum which shall not be named, involving a test of 14 different op amps in a Timmy. Here's the soundclick, good stuff but I doubt I can hear any appreciable difference.
