Members Moonlight Blue
Just bought the small 5 watt Gretsch G5222 (same as Fender Champion 600) and am ready to make some improvements. I got myself a 6" Jensen Mod speaker made in Italy and I'll probably replace the pre-amp tube with either a JJ ECC83 or ECC82 or an EH or Tung-Sol 12ax7. On the other hand I have no experience with power tube. The one in place is a 6v6, made in china (could not read the brand). Does it need to be re-biased? I think I've read that class A amps do not need rebiasing. Is it correct?Any risk of high voltage when changing a power tube?Any recommendation on the type? EL84, EL34, 6L6, 6V6? I really don't know the difference between them. Thanks a million!!!
Members guitarcapo
They don't need to be rebiased. Not because they are class A.....but because they are "cathode biased" There's no bias pot anyway. I've even used other octal tubes like 6L6GB, KT66, or 6L6GC in mine. You aren't technically supposed to because those tubes require more heater current that the transformer might not be able to handle AND the output transformer is made for 6V6 tubes. But I've done it and had no problems. As a matter of fact here's a Fender Champ 5e1 with some different power tubes for comparison: power tube test
Members Moonlight Blue
Thanks. Very helpful link. For 6V6 or 6L6, any manufacturer you would recommend? Or stay away from?I could try JJ, EH, Mullard or Tungsol. Don't want to buy too many. I have not been thrilled by GT.
