Timothy Wenzel, a longtime and apparently successful research scientist in the field of organic chemistry (making new plastics), also has played piano since he was a small child. Now he is setting aside the test-tubes, beakers and microscopes for synthesizers, sequencers, electronic keyboards and the like. In the past year Wenzel has released his first two albums with the latest being A Coalescence of Dreams.

The music is straight-ahead new age music -- soft, sinuous, soaring, floating. There are two key elements that make new age music really worthwhile -- if it is interesting to your mind as you listen, and if it also does something to your body/soul/spirit. Wenzel’s music offers both of those things. The music could be used for many of those new age traditions such as relaxation, meditation, yoga or other light workouts, healing, love-making, searches for inner peace, day-dreaming, or even sleeping. But what this CD offers that some of the other do not have is the ability to hold the listener’s interest if you are simply sitting there listening and wanting to be entertained.

There are dreamy, relaxing tunes such as “Apparition” and the title tune. There also are more vibrant numbers including “Ice Wind” (which has some electric guitar on it) and “A Walk in the Summer Woods” (with its confluence of flute, synth and violin). Speaking of violin, there are some nice soaring violin parts on “”Road to Hana,” “Follow the River” and “We Walk Together.” Acoustic piano is evident in most of the compositions and a flute also is often featured.

This recording is highly recommended for new age music lovers. You can’t go wrong walking down this road.
