Members irpacynot
FWIW, I was able to track down the link I was looking for through some friends. It has a great wealth of info about compression : http://web.archive.org/web/20030401181819/www.studiocovers.com/articles3.htm Enjoy!
Members cstime
I tend to compress the heck out of guitar on recordings; I like what it does to the tone (lots of people don't, though - I usually use compression very sparingly with other peoples' stuff). Live is a lot trickier, since you don't have the luxury of time to get it "just right" or knowledge of exactly what everyone else is hearing. I've been trying to find a good compressed sound for live, but so far it's eluded me so I just set my compressor to squash the loud bits and to prevent feedback (anti-feedback is a wonderful use for a compressor/limiter, especially if your pickup has a microphone component). I probably need a higher-power machine than my $100 Alesis 3630 to get the sound I like live.
