Members blindopher
hi,has anyone encountered difficulty tinning the braided shield of a guitar cable with an electrostatic shield? I can tin the hot lead no prob, but the the braided shield is a nightmare. Could it be picking up something of that electrostatic shield (the black film over the insulation of the main lead). I'm able to tin copper braids as thick with no problem. If this is the problem, should i use propyl alcohol to clean it, or just apply more flux? (i'm using 60/40 with 2.2% flux - flows very nicely over anything except that damn thing i described). Thanx.
Members Kazinator
It does sound as if the copper braid had some gunky residue on it. Unfortunately, heating it likely carbonized that residue and the easiest thing is to just cut off the end of the cable and start again. Flux cuts through a thin oxidation layer, not through burnt hydrocarbon residue. This time clean the newly exposed braid with solvent. Acetone if you have it; it dissolves better than isopropyl alcohol.Apply flux liberally after cleaning.
