Members musicofthemind9
im not real happy with the sound of my vintage noiseless pups in my mim strat, i was wondering if putting 500k pots in the volume knob or tone knobs might give it a better sound. what do yall think? im not a specialist in that area. would it beef up the sound or make it sound cheesy or what, i really have no idea. thanx. Members TheDarxide
Putting in higher value pots adds treble and brightness to the sound.
Members wilmer
The change of pots from 250k to 500 in Strat will normally give a much brighter sound, and opposite for a humbucker equipped guitar which nornally use 500k pots. But (I can be wrong here) I believe the Vintage Noiseless use 1 meg pots, so I don
Members aero90
I hate to hijack the thread, but a related question: Will a higher value pot give you more or less control effectiveness? Will a 500K tone pot have more effect when turned than a 250K tone pot?
Members wilmer
Perhaps not more "effect", but it will be brighter with a 500k pot, compared to a 250k. This often lead to a more lively and more dynamic sound, but not "louder" or anything like that. A 500k pot can also be too bright in some guitars, and it
Members IdaCrue
I got a Tele that had 500K pots installed in it. The sound was bright, almost bordering on brittle. I changed out the pots to 250K pots. It warmed up and sounded much better to my ears. Then I changed the pickups to Rio Grande Muy Grande in the bridge and Dimarzio Twang King in the neck and the guitar sounds Muy Better even.Back to the point of the story, the 500K pots should warm up the guitar if you are using 1 Meg now. Strats are one of the easiest guitars on the planet to modify and pots are very very cheap. Like wilmer said, change them out and change back or go even lower (250K) if you like. My VN PUs came with 500 & 1 Meg pots, see text here for pot setup. " Each Vintage Noiseless Strat pickup set comes with three pots (currently, one 500K volume pot and two 1 Meg tone pots), a capacitor and resistor"
