ASX To MP3 Converter Settings

I downloaded some speech files and converted them to MP3 using a utility called:

 

ASX To MP3 Converter.

 

I used the following settings:

 

Constant Bitrate: 8

(The other options here are

Average Bitrate

Variable Bitrate)

 

Channels: mono

(The other options here are

Joint Stereo

Dual Channel)

 

Original: (ticked)

(The other option here is

Private)

 

Checksum: (ticked)

 

The problem I'm having is that the sound quality is not that good to begin with and once I converted these files the sound quality became unintelligable.

 

All of this is new to me so any suggestions would be helpful.
