Recording from "headphones out"

I have headphones out jacks on some of my guitar amplifiers and guitar effects boxes. The headphone signal is often good sounding and detailed, but somewhat weak. It appears to be a two-channel, balanced sound.

How would I best record this signal?

Should I split it?

What do I need to do to split it into a R/L track, or should I combine the R/L to a balanced monosignal.

What should I do to amplify the signal? Amplify it with one of my preamps with mic or line input?

Should I purchase a headphone amp with appropriate outs?

I assume that the signal is low-Z so I do not need to worry about a HiZ/LowZ mismatch?

I would appreciate your advice.

Hi Where,

The choices are not many and not good with this amp.

I can have send/return, headphones, or speaker out.

What do you recommend.

I like the headphone out, which is also referred to as a DI out in the manual (Rocktron).

Hi Where,

I will try that, but it may interfere with my current concept of micing the cab and using the somewhat pristine signal of the headphones out of my effects box.

Can you explain to me how the send signal is different than the headphone out signal?

Yours,

ES
