I would think a 51 could make an excellent slide guitar. Don't forget, you have 5 different tones built into the switch that might just cover it for you. If you want a tonepot, put one in. I find the neck to be warm, the mid to be chimey, and the bridge has a nice attack mode, plus you can use the bridge in either humbucking or single coil mode by itself and in conjunction with the neck pup.

 

When you get it, give it a lissen.

 

My favorite guitar for slide is a danelectro, middle position!!

I have a 51 and I thought of that - but I have a dedicated slide guitar which I don't use that much. I usually play slide on my Bradley Strat-clone, which I make no changes to.

So....try it and see if you need even to raise the action - maybe not. Or raise it a little. I wouldn't change the p/u for slide - there is plenty there already. I like S/C for slide.
