isolating the guitar in a mixed track using garageband?

I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff, but could a minidisc recording be put into Garageband so that just the electric guitar could be pulled? I want to use an old guitar track while re-recording the drums, bass, and vocals. I'd imagine no matter what I do, there will still be some of the other sounds left in the guitar track, but with the other instruments retracked nearly the same it should cover that, right?

Does this process have a name?

It can't be done. That's like baking a cake and then trying to take out the egg. Once it is mixed together into a stereo audio file the best you can hope for is to try to get SOME isolation based on where the guitar is panned and what frequency range it occupies, but you can never completely get rid of the rest of the track. It will take you far less time, and sound way better if you just re-track that guitar when you re-track the rest of the song.
