IIRC, Fender had an excess of MIM parts in the mid 90s and put them together and badged them as Squiers. People have been known to sand off the "Squier Series" and try to sell them as regular MIM Fenders, but you can tell they're not because all MIM standards have the gold foil logo rather than the black one.
