So, how exactly do I use this?

I made this guy to debug a pedal kit I bought a long time ago that still won't work, but I'm not sure I'm using it correctly.

Do I just hook it up to an amp and follow the signal path until I don't hear anything come out of the amp?

Do I need to have the pedal itself plugged into a guitar and amp in order to use it? Does someone need to be playing the guitar?

Just want to make sure I'm using it correctly, as I can't seem to find any cold joints or places on the PCB where the probe doesn't make noise.

For reference, heres a link to the site I lifted this from:

From the instruction in the link it seems plugging in the guitar may be optional. You might as well plug it in when testing.

I imagine the prob will only work if you have some power going through the pedal.

What pedal is the kit? If it has caps with polarities then make sure they are going in the right direction.
