Members StratoSlacker
I plan on installing some locking tuners on my LP studio. The stock tuners are starting to piss me off. I'd like to avoid having to widen the holes in the pegboard but I don't mind drilling holes for screws if necessary. I'd like to hear recommendations on which locking tuners to get. Thanks! Members Fuelish
a new nut or perhaps, at the very least, a "lubed" nut ..... (and hopefully properly wound/stretched strings).
Members hondro
honestly there are so many factors that effect tuning more so than the tuners Tuners are just gears and gears can not just "slip" and put the guitar out of tune. I have locking tuners on one guitar and there is no difference in tuning stability than my other guitars. I really dont know why I bought them. Members hondro
oh yeah, the reason people get locking tuners is so you can just stick the string through the post and wind it up. no need to wrap around the post or any of that jazz. Thats what I do at least on my locking tuners
Members StratoSlacker
i'm not having tuning or nut problems. two of the tuners are damaged, one has a chipped knob and the one next to it is bent. the cosmetics don't bother me so much but the bent tuner is really annoying when changing strings. so...locking tuner recommendations would be appreciated as I prefer locking tuners. thanks
Members hondro
well in that case. Locking Grovers are always a standard. I think Locking Sperzels look pretty cool with their satin finish
Members thredlok
I like the sperzels better than the grovers. I had better luck with them.
Members jds22
Satin Sprezels FTW.
Members rparchen
Below is what a locking Grover will look like on your LP (the gold is a non-locking Grover). I thought they looked stupid so I yanked them and went with Sperzel's (and should have in the first place).

Members StratoSlacker
wow, that Grover has a really long post on it. Did you have to do any drilling to install either type?

Members GarysBlues
Check out the NEW Klusons. They look identicle to whats on your LP now but are like 18:1 ratio and supposedly a very good new design? I read about them and understnad at some point soon Gibson will be using them? I didn't have to do any drilling for either the Sperzel or Grover, locking or non. The long shafts were not to my liking and I thought they looked strange. I'd rather have the Sperzel's on there and live with the screw holes in the back.
Members Prages
My favorite locking tuners are Schallers. I hate Sperzels. If it were me, I'd just replace the mangled tuners with the same style of tuner. Locking tuners on a LP are like tits on a bull.
Members StratoSlacker
lots of opinions, i like this. thanks to all who have replied. nobody has touched my drilling questions yet. which brands/models will require hole-widening? those will be ruled out immediately. again, i don't mind drilling screw holes or having screw holes exposed, but i don't want to do major surgery on the guitar. Members JC777
I'm pretty sure all the Grovers are drop in.
Members GuitaRasmus
Planet Waves. One of the best and cheapest locking tuners. Drop in replacement, I use them on my LP Classic 1960.
