But it really depends on who is setting up the thing and who is maintaining the thing. In general the majority of the site hosting services you can use are going to run linux. The reason is they can cram a bunch of other sites onto a machine and then reduce costs without reducing quality. With windows this is much harder (although microsoft is trying). However, you also shouldn't have to care what operating system it is unless you are purposefully trying to build the software to run the site by yourself. In fact, you can go to any number of very cheap services like dreamhost, pay about $8 a month, and have a wordpress (a brand of blog software) site up in a few minutes. It's way too cheap to have your site hosted elsewhere. Hosting it yourself introduces a whole slew of other concerns besides just the OS it's on. With windows this is much harder (although microsoft is trying). It is actually really symple to do this in IIS (Windows). I'm not sure why you would think otherwise. Pretty much every host runs shared servers, be it Windows, Linux or otherwise. Linux is cheapest and therefore is most common. To address the OP's question... Performance differences between well-configured Windows or Linux servers are not large enough to make a difference. If you want to use asp.net (and related technologies) and/or SQL Server then you'll want to be on Windows. If that isn't the case then the OS matters little - pick the one you know how to configure and optimize. If you don't have any background in webserver management then just pay somebody else to host your site. It's really cheap (unless you're hosting Google or something). Members gustavson Posted January 23, 2010 Members Share Posted January 23, 2010 Personally, I would choose a Linux based server. It's robust, runs fast and it's very very stable. Also it depends what kind of website you want to have. My personal opinion if you need a website: a PHP website on Linux server (with the MySQL database) is the way to go. Even if you buy hosting from whatever hosting company, just buy the extra private IP and you're done: cheap, reliable, not shared, and your site is 99.99% of the time up and running well.
