This is a visualization I did (in Blender) for the racks I'm intending to build:

I'm planning on picking up the materials tomorrow (weather permitting), and I was just curious what rack enthusiasts though about this layout.

I'm planning on building two 12U units out of 3/4" poplar plywood, painting them black inside and out and covering them with carpet. I left a pocket about two inches high up top where I plan to hardwire in a cold cathode tube for illumination. I'll probably put a switch on the face to turn the light on and off.

The local music shop here sells 12U rails for about $13 a rail. I intend to put them in both the front and the back.

The images look good.
:thu:

Any thoughts of adding castors to the bottoms to aid in moving them?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm intending to add casters and handles as well. I could build latching face covers, but at this time I'm pretty much a play at home kinda guy. I figure that's something I could add later should the need arise.

Finally the weather was decent enough, and my other obligations light enough that I was able to make some progress on my racks this weekend. I was able to get almost every thing I needed out of one 4x8 sheet of plywood. There is still more to do (internal structure / bracing) but I can get that out of scrap plywood I have laying around.

Here is an updated render of my general overall plan (front view is on the right, rear view on the left):

Actual dimensions wound up being roughly 20.75" wide x 28.5" tall x 21" deep.

Wow, so ... those wooden boxes have been sitting, unfinished, in my room for almost ten months now. I finally decided to get off my ass and finish them, even though they did make good shelves. Turns out they hold a semi-large Rubbermaid container perfectly.

This week I mounted the 12U rails in the front and the back of both cabinets. After mounting 96 T-Nuts (along with 96 Bolts and 288 washers), I can honestly say that if I never see another T-Nut it will be too soon (although T-Nut does sound like a good rapper name).

I've got one cabinet painted and carpeted (wrapped, but not folded in and trimmed down) and I'm hoping to finish both of them off tonight.

I bought some cheap ($2.99) 2" swivel casters at the local department store, that are rated at 90lb, but I'm thinking they might be too small.

I also need to find corners, but that might be difficult since I didn't round edges off with a router.

I'll try and post some pics later.

Well, I've got one nearly done. I was too tired last night to take the utility knife and expose the pre-drilled holes underneath the carpeting for the rear rails. But that should only take about 10 minutes. Then I just need to bolt on the rear rails, find some decent casters, and some corners.

Here's some pictures. Sorry, they are a bit grainy.

The other cabinet is ready to be upholstered. The duct tape is to hold all the T-Nuts in place.

Rack #1 is done and loaded (though nothing is hooked up).

I found some decent 4" casters at the hardware store. I was surprised at how expensive casters can be (it adds up when you need 8 of them).
