Members cmw
EDIT: Outdated pics in this thread changed to links to minimize the clutter. Most recent pic:. Original Post: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a visualization I did (in Blender) for the racks I'm intending to build: http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/rackrender.jpg I'm planning on picking up the materials tomorrow (weather permitting), and I was just curious what rack enthusiasts though about this layout. I'm planning on building two 12U units out of 3/4" poplar plywood, painting them black inside and out and covering them with carpet. I left a pocket about two inches high up top where I plan to hardwire in a cold cathode tube for illumination. I'll probably put a switch on the face to turn the light on and off. The local music shop here sells 12U rails for about $13 a rail. I intend to put them in both the front and the back.
Members Gorgon90
The images look good. Any thoughts of adding castors to the bottoms to aid in moving them?

Yeah, I'm intending to add casters and handles as well. I could build latching face covers, but at this time I'm pretty much a play at home kinda guy. I figure that's something I could add later should the need arise.
Members cmw
Finally the weather was decent enough, and my other obligations light enough that I was able to make some progress on my racks this weekend. I was able to get almost every thing I needed out of one 4x8 sheet of plywood. There is still more to do (internal structure / bracing) but I can get that out of scrap plywood I have laying around. http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/racks.jpg Here is an updated render of my general overall plan (front view is on the right, rear view on the left): http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/rack_front%26back.jpg Actual dimensions wound up being roughly 20.75" wide x 28.5" tall x 21" deep. Members cmw
Wow, so ... those wooden boxes have been sitting, unfinished, in my room for almost ten months now. I finally decided to get off my ass and finish them, even though they did make good shelves. Turns out they hold a semi-large Rubbermaid container perfectly. This week I mounted the 12U rails in the front and the back of both cabinets. After mounting 96 T-Nuts (along with 96 Bolts and 288 washers), I can honestly say that if I never see another T-Nut it will be too soon (although T-Nut does sound like a good rapper name). I've got one cabinet painted and carpeted (wrapped, but not folded in and trimmed down) and I'm hoping to finish both of them off tonight. I bought some cheap ($2.99) 2" swivel casters at the local department store, that are rated at 90lb, but I'm thinking they might be too small. I also need to find corners, but that might be difficult since I didn't round edges off with a router. I'll try and post some pics later.
Members NyteOwl
I don't think you need to worry about rounding off the edges before installing corners, but I would definitely forget about those 2" casters and invest in heavy duty 4" casters. Members cmw
Well, I've got one nearly done. I was too tired last night to take the utility knife and expose the pre-drilled holes underneath the carpeting for the rear rails. But that should only take about 10 minutes. Then I just need to bolt on the rear rails, find some decent casters, and some corners. Here's some pictures. Sorry, they are a bit grainy. http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/rack_diy_01.jpg http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/rack_diy_02.jpg The other cabinet is ready to be upholstered. The duct tape is to hold all the T-Nuts in place. http://www.neurojack.com/gallery/galleries/gear/rack_diy_03.jpg
Members cmw
Rack #1 is done and loaded (though nothing is hooked up). I found some decent 4" casters at the hardware store. I was surprised at how expensive casters can be (it adds up when you need 8 of them).
