Members SixStringSuperf
Hey guys What qualifies as a good or bad cable, in regards to microphone and speaker cables? I mean, I see 16 gauge speaker cables and 24 gauge microphone cables by Galaxy Audio and Rapco and other such brands for under 20 bucks. Is there anything wrong or non-recommendable about these cables? Thanks -Dan
Members agedhorse
I can't comment on Galaxy, but Rapco makes both top quality cables and lower quality cables. Wire gauge in speaker cables really depends on your application, power level and length of the run. For longer runs, say 50 feet, I like to use between 14 and 16ga depending on the power and load impedance. The lower the load impedance, the larger the cable. 50' with an 8 ohm load at moderate volumes (say 150 watts) would be ok with 18 gauge, but a 4 ohm load and 400 watts would suggest that 14 would be more appropriate. Mark (Audiopile) could probably expand on these comments better since he deals with cables all the time. His cables (EWI) are generally a very good value IMO.
