  • MIDI on the cheap (noob needs help)

I have an old Yamaha SY55, probably 20 years old at this point. It has a MIDI out, with some ungodly number of pins, about the size of an XLR jack. Can I connect this ancient thing to a laptop and use it as a MIDI controller? If so, what equipment do I need to make it run? (adapters, software, etc.)

If I can't use the keyboard I have, how can I get a nice MIDI control rig set up, preferably for less than $700?

MIDI out? Get a USB-Midi cable like the ESI Midi Mate. Plug & Play and enjoy your softsynths!

What's a good softsynth for vintage sounds like mellotron, Rhodes piano, etc? I guess technically I'm looking more for a sampling software.

        Mellotron: GForce M-Tron PRO
Rhodes: GSi Mr. Ray73 mkII, NI Elektrik Piano, Pianoteq 3+EP Add-on...
        Clavinet: GSi ZD6
Hammond: NI B4-II, GSi VB3 (excellent!)
        Minimoog: GForce Minimonsta

That should satisfy your vintage urges, maybe. Anything else needed?

...but probably version 2 or a different brand since the first gave me a few BSODs. Do keep in mind to connect the MIDI out to the synth's MIDI in, otherwise you'll be puzzled for like half an hour why nothing's working.

As for the software synthesizers, not all of 'm may have standalone versions, so a host is recommended (think Cubase, Reaper, Sonar, Logic, Ableton Live, FL Studio, etc.).

...or just a simple free VSTHost to load them all up.
