Members danelectro_boy
hypothetical situation here....(well, not really) someone with a few offhand contacts both locally for shows, and nationally for booking and management companies says: "i'd like to help you out, etc....ill re-record your demo professionally in my nice professional studio for free, and if all goes well, we'll do a non exclusive contract. you don't owe me anything, ill book your shows without charging a percentage, and if you were snapped up by a label in the process, i'll get $10K upfront from the company, and 1% stake in your cd sales..." sound fishy? anyone? i've heard it once before, but blew it off. this being the second time, im starting to think its a pretty regular deal... thoughts? avoidable? yes? no? Members Ministry of FOG
As a former manager, and owner of my own studio, my question comes from where does this guy get his money for the time and effort spent on you? I mean, sure he get's $10,000 if you get signed, but that "if" is huge. He's not wanting a percentage of anything for booking (not typical). He's willing to spend time and money in producing an album, again for nothing? To me, there's something fishy about it, but I can't put my finger on it. either that, or the guy's an idiot...? Members danelectro_boy
objections noted. i asked about the free studio time, and got a decent answer. "I have faith in you, or else i wouldn't want to do it." I can only minutely buy into that rationale because of the simple fact that the guy drove 3 hours round trip last nite to come and hear us practice, after getting ahold of our demo. as far as booking any shows, there are very few high profile, high paying gigs to cash in on around here, and i guess he's willing to write off the 20 bucks a week he'd get. the guy's a straight shooter, but i wont believe anything until he makes some results. if he can get a producer to show up, etc..then ill believe him. i havent bought in, i just wanted to know if these "non exclusive deals" are frequent. as far as the studio time is concerened...i assume that we will pay for adat tapes, etc...i imagine he's just talking about the rate. *shrugs shoulders* i realize this sort of thing happens every day. maybe one of you could help me sort through the bull{censored}.
