we are an original band that is just started to get things going and we are getting ready to record a demo. but we need to know how the best way to copyright the songs. i've heard there is ways you can start your own label or publishing company and then you'll own the rights or is it easier just to copyright them like you would anything else? how do most people do it?

also, can anyone shoot me some links that would be good or me to read about?

Your songs are copyrighted the day they are written on paper or recorded on a tangible medium. What you want to do is to register your copyright with the library of congress.

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/forms/ is the only link you'll ever need. OK and maybe their FAQs: http://www.loc.gov/copyright/

Download their form SR+notice. It will allow you to copyright a sound recording and all the songs that are on it, both at the same time. A lot of people fill out one form PA for each song they record, but there really is no need to do that unless you're not the owner of the recording. You'd be wasting time, money and trees.

Starting your own label or publishing company has nothing to do with copyright and won't help you here. It's a lot of paperwork so think twice before doing it. It's like....let's say you want to give guitar lessons. Are you going to incoroporate a business and hire a lawyer and spend hours filling forms? Naaaaaooo. You'll start placing ads, getting students and freakin' teaching them. Well. Same here. Start getting some gigs, selling some CDs and tee-shirts, and then you'll see. That's my opinion. Others may differ, as usual ;)

I did a bunch of mine under a collection... saved alot of paperwork if that helps. Then others were done when I sold them to Taxim records, they did all the paperwork... etc.... Good advice on other post

mp3.com basically charges you extra to fill out the form for you. Unless you really don't want to spend five minutes and fill out the forms yourself, then go ahead and spend four (and a half) minutes filling out the mp3.com online forms and they'll print that in the refular forms and send them for you. Really not worth giving them your hard earned money.
