XV-5050 or other module?

I am looking to upgrade Casio WK3000 and Kurz SP88 setup with a sound module primarily for better EP and B3- and better all around sound. I play live rock, blues, jazz and figure I could add sound module below bottom board on my stand. My budget is $400 to $800 based on my initial research.

I have a lot to learn and based on surfing reviews am drawn to XV5050 [seems more capable than 2020] although it appears that older used JV with expansion board or even XP-30 [keys almost free bonus] might be good. I recently saw gent playing outdoors at Monterey Bay and he sounded great with older Roland module he got on ebay for

If B3s and EPs are all you're interested in, it really doesn't matter much which Roland module you choose, since they're all really lame in these sounds without either SRJV 60s/70s or SRX Ultimate Keys. You will have to add one to whatever you choose in order to be happy. And since both of these expansion boards contain the same B3/EP waveforms, it doesn't matter which. Even a 1080 will work for the module, but I wouldn't go as small as the 1/2 rack jobs because you can't edit as easliy on them.

There's a wide variety of B3 settings on both expansion boards, but for live use it helps to edit at least the Rotary effect. If you are mono, runnning separation to 127 and then using only the right out will get you that mic'ed Leslie sound with exaggerated "whoosh".

you can get one of those off ebay for less than $200 then slap the SRJV 60s/70s expansion card in it

I wouldn't think that the JV would sound like crap when compared to the XV, it's just that the XV has a lot more modern technology stuck into it.

Here's my recommendations for Rolands (this is just for B3s/EPs) based on price:

JV-1080 ($150-200) + SRJV 60s-70s ($200-250) : $350-450. That's right... the expansion board will cost more than they were new, and more than the module, because they're in such demand. There's one currently on E-Bay with a Buy Now price of $229, and if you're thinking of going this way I'd buy it, because they don't come up that often.

XV-3080 or 5050 (you should be able to pick either up for around $300-350) + SRX Ultimate Keys (new $250) : $550-600. These will obviously give you a much larger and better selection of sounds other than EPs and B3s, but the EPs and B3s are really about the same as with the 1080/60s-70s. You might as well just buy the expansion board new, because they have been selling on E-Bay for almost as much used.

IMO, there's really no other modules that sound as good for these sounds in this price range.

The suggestion of an Electro Rack is a great one if you want to spend at the top of your range and can find one. It's tough to tell what used Electros sell for based on E-Bay. I just took a peek, and practically none are selling because everyone has their reserve too high. My guess is that you should be able to get the rack or even a 61 for well under a grand from a realistic seller. Used Roland VK7s and 8s are also in this range if you wanted to just concentrate on the B3 sounds.

If there is anyway you can stretch your budget, I agree with the earlier post. Watch Ebay, be patient and grab an Electro Rack. It took me over a month but I got one for $825.00.

You can spend $350 on an XV5050 $225 for an SRX-12 EP

and maybe $215 for the SRX-07 to improve the Roland EP's and organs. Total = $790 And when your done your EP's will be awesome but your organs still wont touch the Electro.

If you're budget is really tight and your not that picky about your sounds, just spring for the XV5050 and the SRX 07. That will surely upgrade what you have now. Ewall
