Members shambler
Hi, I am looking for a module to compliment my current setup. I use a Triton Extreme 61 synth and a Roland V-Synth XT rack and wanted to know would the ES compliment these two or would it just be overkill i.e. more of the same? If not what module would you recommend (for around the
Guest Anonymous
I have a Fantom XR and a Motif Rack ES and use each of there sounds panned a lot of times. The ES has a more straight on sound where the XR has a more hyped sound. Don't have a Triton Rack anymore per a MH recommendation. 2 centz
Members mrcpro
What sounds do you feel you're deficient in? When do you say "Boy I wish I had a bettter this or that?"
Members shambler
Mainly I would like some highly detailed and realistic solo orchestral instruments such as solo strings/pianos and also some more choral and backing string/brass sounds. Generally though I find the more sounds I have available to me the more likely I am to get inspired.
Members Henway_piano
I've had the ES-8 for about a year, the acoustic instruments are unrivaled.... The synths are phenominal too, but looks like you've got that covered already....

TBH - there isnt alot to choose between them - I think the XR has sampling, or you can at least upload samples (?) You cant with the ES-Rack, but you can add a couple of PLG cards to the ES rack, so I have the DX7 card in mine. Sound wise - some of the sounds are very good, some of them are way over processed and crap IMHO. Drum and Perc sets are very good, Pianos so so (need more sustain), but they are at least very clean. In general most sound do a very good job at disguising sample zones and layer. Im not hugely impressed with many of the orchestral sounds. I rate it more as a pop/rock -box for stock sounds, where the roland may be more of a jazz box for it basic stock sounds in terms of character. On board FX are OK, but I tend to use external fx anyway (mostly TC electronic fx boxes). TBH - Since I bought an Alesis fusion a while back, I have rarely been using it that much - I prefer the more natural, less processed sounds in the fusion, so may sell it soon once I decide what to do about upgrading my v-drum kit. Members orangefunk
I had the ES and VSynth at the same time. To be honest I don't think I really appreciated what I had, although I was always chasing technical issues (e.g. hum, noisy laptop fans etc..) than actually spending time making music. I think the ES has some awesome sounds... some gorgeous pads, great epianos, electric guitars, horns, choirs but also some pretty dull stuff such as the old school synthy sounds which didn't really capture the essence... Agree about the acoustic pianos too... I didn't find it that useful at all... What really lacked for me on the Yamaha MOTIF was the feeling of programming your own sounds.... it was really a breeze with the VSynth... (although I thought its sample editing could have been better) I hope Yamaha release a new keyboard that contains all the MOTIF stuff as well as better computer integration and VL sttuff in the near future... I reckon an updated Yamaha and updated Roland VSynth would be a wicked combo... For now though, I have no GAS issues.... all I have is a CX3 setup atm... need to finish my thesis by December!
