Members Mintbeetle
So my christmas budget is 300 bucks maximum and I want to get some drum pads. Then I will also need to get a decent audio interface so I can play them with low latency. Problem is compouned by my laptop failing to have Firewire. SO I was looking at the akai mpd-16, but then the korg PadKontrol beckoned to me with sultry red LEDs and its xy controller. And a pricetag of 100 bucks more. And I glanced at the mpd-24 with its wealth of knobs and sliders. And I realized that I would just want to upgrade the mpd-16 soon anyway. For audio interface I would really like to have 2 XLR mic inputs. Line and instrument inputs would be good too. I keep hearing horror stories about doing audio over USB, but if I get a firewire interface then I have to drop another ~30 bucks on a 6-pin PCMCIA card. However I really want good latency, and i'm worried about putting the drum controller and audio on the same USB bus. Are there any ebay steals on older FW interfaces? All Said And Done I really wish I had a 500 dollar budget... Maybe I will just have to go some months without weed and alcohol. But that, my friends, is a tall order. ideas? especially good cheap options for the audio interface? Anyone want to sell their old one?

Members syncretism
Do you have a cardbus slot [edit, duh, you said you did]? Get a VX Pocket v2 card: http://www.digigram.com/products/getinfo.htm?prod_key=9000 Thinking about this, I have one, buried somewhere in the unpacked studio boxes, that I can sell dirt cheap to you. I only use the laptop for DJing, and I have an echo Indigo card for that. If you don't buy it from me, get it from eBay or somesuch. It's a solid performer. Sorry if this sounds like spam; I didn't think of the card until I read your post.

Members kvmoore
Yeah. I have a Windows laptop with the Echo Indigo IO PCMCIA card and the latency is superb. Excellent for MIDI controllers and softsynths. I also use it for recording and the quality is great.
