Kurzweil 2600X reliability and keyboard action

Hi everybody. I just got the PC2R and and could not be happier with it. I've been offered a great deal on a K2600X...However, I am hesitant to take it, as it seems that almost 1 out of every 4 reviews or comments I read about it (and most Kurzweil boards in general) have had problems with the reliability of it (and that's brand new, I'd be getting this used). Also, I had a PC88MX for a brief period but sold it because I hated the action on it so much...I really like my Midiboard, however it is just not practical to for me to keep anymore. How does the action on the K2600X compare to these? What are your experiences with the reliability of Kurz boards in general?

I was always under the assumption that Kurz products are pretty much bullet proof. The only issues I've ever heard about is the Tact switches on some K2500s.

My K2000 is probably 15 years old, and has two Tact switches that need to be swapped, and it needs a good take apart and clean and put back together. That's it.

Never played a K2600X, but I've heard the action is good.

Kurzweil reliability is near to perfect. Most of the reliability issues are linked with the Fatar keyboards they use. The actions on K26xx synths are Fatar too, so if you didn't like the one on your PC88MX, I doubt you will be very happy with the one on a K2600. On the other hand, nothing compares to a MIDIboard in terms of action. So you might reevaluate if you really should get rid of yours, especially if it's a v3.

Personally, I will never sell my MIDIboard v3. Zero problem, perfect reliability, just like my Kurzweil Pro-1 module and my PC2X. I also happen to not be very impressed by the action on the PC2X, not in terms of reliability but because the Fatar keyboard has limited precision compared to the MIDIboard, and it also feels like your fingers are hitting against concrete when you play ff. Too bad nobody creates actions like the MIDIboard anymore (did I mention you should think twice before getting rid of yours?).

Still working off the K2500XS here, and I can say that since 1998-99 when I bought it, I have never had it in the shop for anything beyond an upgrade.

The beast is a tight ship!

Assuming that the Kurz 2600s are built the same way, then I think you will be quite happy with your purchase.

Thank you guys so much for your replies, they are much appreciated! Like you guys I had always been under the impression that Kurzweils were bulletproof, but after doing some research I swear it seemed that 25% of the comments and reviews I read claimed to have some reliability issue. Even though I've pretty much just been using Reason 4.0 lately, I really do want to get back to just using a workstation, I started with that (a 5 octave Triton LE!) and looking back I'd have to say that was when I was most prolific...I am in the process of getting rid of most of my gear for that exact reason. Cydonia, you're absolutely right about the Midiboard, the strange thing is that I actually prefer the action on my QS8...I know, you probably think I'm nuts, but it's true! Even though I really miss the poly AT sometimes, for me the feel of the QS8's keys make up for it...considering what I have seen them going for on eBay lately, I really can't have that kind of money just sitting around collecting dust.

Thanks once again and I'll keep you guys posted...
