Keyboard confusion

I am getting back into playing after a long time away from the keys and am realizing how much the tech has changed.

I'd like to spend well under $1K to have something fairly versatile that I can lug around as well as plug into the computer and play at home.

I'd like piano action and also to get classic sounds like Rhodes, Hammond B3, etc.

Don't care if the sounds are produced by my computer or by the keyboard itself, as long as it sounds good.

I understand the differences between a synthesizer and MIDI controller but am wondering if there is one keyboard that is reasonably priced that does both?

M-Audio ProKey 88 looked like it might fit the bill but only got OK reviews, as far as I can tell.

What are the good models to look at?

Thanks

Bob

Any MIDI-equipped synth can be used as a controller. There are varying degrees of competence in midi implementation and ease of use of any synth when used as a controller, but most synths from the late 1980's on forward can at least send send not on/note off messages.

rgller, there really are a ton of options, though having "piano action" does narrow it down...I had an M-Audio Keystation Pro and I would definitely stay away from it...for under a grand you're pretty much looking at all used gear, first and foremost you should definitely check out Kurzweil, they have a few boards that will fit your criteria (piano action and, in my opinion, the best Rhodes and Hammond sounds). After that I would check out a Yamaha S80, then as a last resort an Alesis QS8.

Thanks, all for the tips.

Although I said "piano action," I guess semi-weighted keys could do, not sure if that changes the equation.

Do the above all also work as MIDI controllers?

I was thinking I might go used, is eBay the best option? Do established dealers like Sam Ash sell used gear?
