Building a KEYBOARD CONTROLLED analog synth?

Okay, after doing some Google searching and watching videos and reading articles, I STILL haven't found anything about building a synth I can control with a keyboard. But I have a theory. All the videos and stuff show that you use a resistor to control the frequency. Most articles used either knobs or photocells. Can I, instead of a knob etc, put an audio input and plug in a sound source to control the frequency of a basic oscillator? It seems like it would work, but I'm rather unknowledgable of such things. Help?

Yeah yeah very funny.

I want to build an analog synth. No midi. Just like in ye olden days. I'm pretty sure modular synths without midi are controlled via audio output of a keyboard.

Sorry, I couldn't resist... Anyway, yes, there's pitch tracking, but it sounds like what You really want is Control Voltage. When it comes to pitch control, I'd prefer midi. Grated - CV has higher definition, but midi is so much easier to integrate, and when it comes to velocity, 128 steps is quite enough for me. MOTU:s Volta bridges the MIDI/CV gap in an interesting way.

Are You going to build a modular and add a keyboard, or are You looking at building an integrated synth? If that's the case, and if You don't have any special sonic needs, You might want to take a look at the Leipzig or the Minimoog Voyager old school, both seem to do what You want.

If you think this, you probably shouldn't start with

Control voltage is where it's at; far easier than converting a frequency to something you can use in the synth itself.

Start with actual modules instead of trying to jump to building stuff yourself; don't do it because you want to save money, because you won't.

I meant CV gate, but nevermind. I think I'm just going to get an analog system eventually, I just really wanted to build one. Oh well...

There's a plethora of threads on forums all over the web re: that. :) Why don't you start with a semi-modular if you want to get going right away?
