Interesting idea I have been thinking of. What do ya think?

I was checking out some clips of synths and accidentally stumbled on this device called the monomachine, which is like a really sophisticated groove box. I then began thinking how cool it would be to create a box that was geared specifically to film composition which goes against the whole dj/dance groove box grain.

A prog rock/sci fi "groove box" that would come with sci/fi/horror genre presets. The onboard sounds would contain a mixture of percussion and synth but tweaked in a way that was meant to create suspenseful and cliff hanger type rhythms. It would have sequences that are programmed with all kinds of percussion effects mixed with resonant sweeps and other synth sounds. I think the fact that its presets would be programmed specifically for this niche would make it truly unusual and fresh. You could even have a whole bank of presets that start with 70's t.v series/movies inspired patches with quirky names like "Logan's Runner up" or "Spacin' 1999", "John C's typewriter" etrc. Each one would invoke a certain mood reminicisent of certain shows or movies, that would serve as a starting point to create totally original sounds but with film, television composition in mind.

You might be able to sell a soundtrack disc or cartridge that can be used with a particular groovebox, but, developing a dedicated soundtrack groovebox would probably limit your market to the point of diminishing returns.

It's fun to conjure product ideas; sadly, there's always someone like me to piss on your parade.

Omnisphere plus a bunch of percussion loops if you insisted on 'm. Done!

Stylus RMX. Done! :)

The main motivation for using VSTs is the huge sample size, and the realism, that today's samples offer. Omnisphere meanwhile seemed to take over the "sci fi effect" / "atmospheres" market... it's littered over a lot of Hollywood stuff these days.

I think it's half the marketing. But you got to admit that the Spectrasonics presets are very, very nice.

If you *were* to pursue this root, I say, nay on the groovebox. But go and try and make a VST / sample library that kicks Omnisphere's butt. (That would please me, if nothing else but to show up the annoying Spectrasonics hype machine.)

Thanks for the responses but sigh.....software = boring. To me software just doesn't seem like a musical instrument; its like Don Quixote and his side kick...there always the computer or laptop-although the Receptors by Muse seem neat.

There is just something cool about stand alone products-take the Manniken Memotron. Yeah, sure you can buy Mellotron emulating software, but that little instrument is so funky.
