download "apocalypse now"

this is a 6 minute snippet of a 67 minute instrumental collaboration with False Haruspex, you can find them here:

http://iacmusic.com/artist.aspx?ID=29730

so this is not representative of the final product, only a simple mix with only my tracks added to the basic bass and drums i recieved for the 'cross-borders' collaboration...

this features Gregory Straathof and David Lamden on bass and drums.....

gonzo on guitaristic noise.

the visual should be along these lines.....

"apocalypse now, think col. kurtz' palace on the nung river - tiki torches burning, bodies hanging from trees at the river's edge, heads on stakes, etc."

;)

njoy.

OK, I ACTIVATED THE STREAMING FUNCTION.

i've found that the fidelity of the streaming functions of almost all the internet radio stations, except for the ones that broadcast at cd quality, sound like ass, so i've been trying to minimize streaming...

but for you, i'll do it!!

LOL

the downloads always sound better!

plus, you get free tunes to ipod or whatever, in the process.

win, win.

Damn you, I couldn't hear anything so I kept turning up my speakers and then BLAM BLAM BLAM... lol

But seriously, I like the guitar tone/effects. You can definitely wail on the guitar. But I really couldn't detect a melody line at all. Not to be a jerk but this is more like a jam session than a song.

Are you looking for any specific feedback on this tune?

nice modal stuff in the intro. good mood establisher. some people in here might not be feeling it the same way, but the intro has some of the same aspects to it that i love in pink floyd stuff. i dig the pedaling bass with the drums and guitar 'going off' a bit. it's a great suspense builder - and it really did in this piece. i keep going back and forth on whether i like the lead guitar. it seems to not build on a melody, but more on a mood.

that bass line change at 3:30 (give or take) is very cool.

now, on the negative side of the spectrum, i think (although alot of the guitar lines are pretty cool and definitely not guilty of that common overplaying label in and of themselves) you're going to be accused a bit of wankery - as well is the drummer. now, about the guitar playing, i would usually say to play a bit less, but i was honestly entertained with your guitar playing, so i'm not going to do that. it definitely provoked thought. i would, however, like to echo geno in saying that a more defined melody would work wonders for what you're trying to do. i think his 'jam session' comment is pretty astute. i do think, though, the mood/tension build you had going in this would be suggestive of a more 'composed' piece. in other words, you have something here, man. it's just missing a theme.

i definitely want to hear more of this project. it sounds like a cool undertaking and i like the 'snippet' so far.

ps - i think it's only fair to say that there are people out there who would strongly support the 'no melody' thing going on in this - and some would even say the modal stuff in the beginning serves as a theme. it's essentially a taste issue and, taking into consideration that this is but only part of a much larger piece of music, it may not be necessary. i just would have really liked to have something stick in my head a bit more. i would, actually, take a good look at the modal stuff and try to build on that for a central theme. i was hooked in the first ten seconds on it.

LOL

sorry about that....

yeah, its' a 'dynamics' issue.........!

;)

it's true, taking just a 6 minute section, out of 67 minutes total, is not very representative of the whole.

this one section, is the only real 'free-form' type section in the piece...

but the visuals i suggested, which were given to me as a 'go by' for the attitude of this one section, is pretty accurate...

all i was trying to do, was illicit this nightmare vibe, the heads on stakes and all that, and also, i borrowed a wah, so i was into 'the jam'.

no feedback, per se, since this is a 'collaboration', and i'm only the first guy to stick some tracks on it...

it'll make the rounds, and once i get a final mix, i'll post something.

i just thought it was kind of neat to be doing a collaboration with some guys i've never met, who live up in canada, and wanted to share.

bluesway

"good mood establisher"...... hey thanks, that was what i was going for.

it's funny, but i was given a 3 page dissertation from these guys that wrote the piece, broken down minute by minute, and each section was given a 'visual' description, which kind of makes me think maybe they had 'soundtracks' in mind........? maybe this is a dry run for them to figure out how to do this kind of thing.... i don't know, i just blindly signed on!

this was specifically a 'wanking' section, so being accused of wankery is perfectly fine.

there are long.... sections.... of..... melody..... that lead into this one section, so actually, in the big picture, the wankery is needed to break up what transpires just before this section.......

you guys are sharp.

and the idea of composing for this section, yes, i agree, on it's own, it makes sense...

and since i can't really play the whole thing leading up to this section, i'll just have to say that if and when you get to hear it, it'll make more sense.

thanks for the input!!
