Are there powerful modern rock vocalists?

I am not a vocalist but was wondering, does anyone know of younger singers who belt it out possibly along the lines of classic Dio, Ian Gillan, Rob Halford, Glenn Hughes, John Wetton, Paul Williams, Greg Lake, Alex Ligertwood, James Dewar, Freddy Mercury, Steve Walsh or Joe Lynn Turner just to name a few? Of course harmonies would be nice too whether of the Gentle Giant, Yes or Beatles/Squeeze/Jellyfish/King's X variety...

I don't follow a lot of more recent rock very closely partly because I haven't come across much in the way of vocals which I care for and the few more recent bands I do enjoy, I more or less overlook the vocals. I have heard Jorn Lande who reminds me a lot of David Coverdale back in the day and Myles Kennedy but it seems pretty rare to find powerful or refined rock vocals these days regardless of sub-genre...

Thanks

There's Russell Allen of Symphony X, who for me defines powerful singing. Bruce Dickinson and Dio are still kicking it - I saw Dio at Madison Square Garden, and he's a godlike frontman.

I actually can't think of too many powerful modern voices! It seems my tastes are moving towards expressive, agile voices. When did that happen?

Shinedown

Brent Smith has the kind of powerful rock voice people need a studio full of equipment to make.

I'd heard the couple of recent singles they have out, but I came across the songs below by accident. Dude can fricking wail like nobody's business

this is my favorite shinedown song

no

I agree.....MIC knows the VIBE the OEM poster was looking for...and it's very far and few between.

Kelly Clarkston....OMG, dude you totally missed the boat. Did you NOT see the list of singers the poster was looking for comparison's too??????

I can only sit back and hit the BACK button so many times without finally replying.

A new upcoming, young powerful singer....nope. I know they're out there waiting to be signed however....just a matter of the music GENRE to change before we know of them.

I can ONLY relate comparison's to those of the likes of:

Lead singers with a VOICE~

Mudvayne

Slipknot ~ Cory

NOT Linkin Park....

Saliva...with Joey Scott....great voice when he's on.

But I DO NOT see THE WIDE RANGE lead singer of the late 80's early 90's anymore. I simply think the music genre has changed so much that the style isn't called for now days.

However I'm WAY SURE many of the lead singers I listed COULD bring it with BALLZ.

If I had a HOT FORK inches from my eye....I would say either Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour or Chad Gray from Mudvayne...both having capable voices to hang with the "old skool" guys.

Myles Kennedy ALSO could easily hang with the 80's wailers!

Thanks Bigvoice. I appreciate the suggestions and also was surprised at the Clarkson reference to say the least :) I imagine that the overall genre demands today don't generally allow for what I am seeking....

Take care

I think these are the top candidates for Powerful and with a SINGING voice also.

+1

I think Brent has the ultimate rock voice.

Also, the chick from Halestorm has a powerful, Janis Joplin-esque voice. I'm not usually into female-fronted heavy rock, but I really dig this band.

Pick up any album by Ayreon (Dutch prog-metal project), you'll find plenty of great, powerful singers on those, including some already mentioned (Russell Allen, Jorn Lande etc) plus many lesser known ones.

RE: the guy from Shinedown - was just learning 'Second Chance' by them for a covers band and thought the vocals sounded pretty good so had a look at some live performances of the song; very disappointing, the guy really struggles live, sings lower harmonies instead of the main melody for most of it. Either he's just not that good or his voice has been completely blown out for the whole tour...

I've seen Shinedown four times live. Lately Brent has been taking it easy on the high stuff and playing it safe but a few years back he could wail like a madman. Check out some of the tracks on their first album Leave a Whisper... some good tunes there. I'm liking some David Cook too if you're into mainstream/pop rock stuff.

Unfortunately, Dio was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. Let's hope he kicks the demon soon and is able to get back on stage where he belongs.

Thanks to all...Russell Allen, Jorn Lande, Roy Khan, Jeff Scott Soto and Myles Kennedy seem the closest so far

Take care

Roy Khan? Really? I love his voice, I love Kamelot and Conception but Roy's voice is hardly what I would characterize as a powerful rock voice. His voice is very expressive, smooth, and contains a lot of subtleties, which is what makes him stand out from the other progressive/power metal vocalists to me.

Ralph Scheepers - Primal Fear, Gamma Ray

Joacim Cans - HammerFall

Tobias Sammet - Edguy, Avantasia

Marco Hietala - Tarot, Nightwish

And for women, see Anette Olzon from Nightwish and Simone Simons of Epica

RIGHT ON with the Khan description. A great smooth expressive voice with nice phrasing.
