Combo amp to combo/cabinet

I undertook this project this afternoon and didn't see it on the forum so I thought I'd add. It's about as easy as a mod you can do and particularly helpful when you need a spare cabinet around. Now we all have that dusty old practice amp lying around that you never really use, or in my case, using as a PA for vocals at band practice. But do you get tired of lugging your 4x12 around and wish you had a nice 2x12 but don't have the dough right now? Just turn that old SS practice amp into your new 2x12.

Starting with a Fender SS combo:

Find your terminals on your speakers. Mine were conveniently labeled. If your's isn't labeled, then look for the one with a dot on it. That's usually your (+) terminal. Like a lot of cheaper amps, this one uses quick disconnects to bride the terminals to the wiring. Pull the disconnects.

Next go to RadioShack and get a mono 1/4" jack connector, wire, and quick disconnects. Solder your wires your new jack, [the case is your (-) and the center tap is the (+)] and connect it to your speaker terminals with the quick disconnects.

(The wires from the amp section of the combo are in my hand, the wires from the new jacks are on the speaker terminals)

Thats it! You're ready to hook up the head and start shredding! Just make sure your head impedance matches that of your speakers. Mine has as additional jack plate added in back with a spot for the new jack and a combo to cab switch just to clean things up.

If you want to add the combo to cab switch, add a DPDT switch with the new jack on one end, the combo wires on the other end and the common wires to the speaker terminals. You can now switch back and forth between cab operation and combo mode in one switch.

Have fun!
