Members scott8035
When I was just a wee lad, back in 1975 or so, I made a solid mahogany shelving unit for my stereo. The lumber is 1" (planed to 3/4") boards of of varying widths, glued up to form a half-dozen mega-boards measuring about 2'x4'. We almost threw it away the other day, but I drummed my fingers on it out by the curb, and it made these mellow musical sounds my wife gets from her box drum. Sooo.... Into the garage it goes because I also happen to be building a new 13'x15' music room in the basement in the next month. My question to all of you: how best to utilize this lumber in an attractive, musical way? Don't be shy... What I'v imagined is making something that fits right next to a build-in desk and almost looks like a desk w/file drawer, except...the top surface would have striking surfaces sawn into the top (tuned strips that remain part of the whole at the ends). These would be further tuned by carefully increasing the saw cut. Then, for funtion two, imagine splitting the volume below in half, where the left half is open but separated from the right by a baffle. The right half would be almost totally enclosed, except where the baffle stops short enough to allow sound to come in thru the left half, and also a 3" wide hole in the center of its "front door" which would allow me to stick a mike in to get mellowed/verbed room sound. But I'm open to anything funky...what are your ideas for incorporating six slaps of pretty good condition mahogany into a new music room?---scott
