resonant snare head question

I'd like to change the resonant head of my snare.

Right now, I'm using a coated Ambassador on top and some Aquarian head on the bottom. I have a very good snare sound but I'd like to try something else.

What should I try as a resonant head, clear Ambassador or Diplomat, and what kind of sound will I get each of these two heads?

Thanks ;-)

I think an Ambassador would be too thick for a resonant head. Generally, you want your resonant head to be pretty thin. A Diplomat would work, but I'd look into Evans for drum heads - they offer heads specifically for resonant side use.

Evans' resonate heads are just their regular G1's in a different box.

Thanks for your comments, folks!

I tried my toms with coated Ambassadors (top) and clear Evans G1 (bottom) and I got a very annoying ring. Then, I changed the G1 on bottom to clear Ambassadors and... wow! The sound is great and the unwanted ring is gone.

Perhaps I'll have the same ring problem with the snare with a coated Ambassador on top and clear G1 on bottom. That's why I want to stick with Remo top and bottom.

All major drumhead manufacturers make snare side heads. For example Remo makes SS heads in the following weights: diplomat, ambassador, and emporer.

To benleb: Experiment by all means but you will likely find that varying the weight of the SS head will have little effect on the overall sound of the drum. Make sure you do use a head specifically designed for the snare side though. I use the Remo SS Ambassador weight.

I have an evans resonant head on the snare I just bought and it seems to be fine. The snare sounds great and there is no more ring than I need-generally wood snares have less overtones than toms and metal snares have more overtones than wood snares. You want to have a thin head on the snare side so the snares can vibrate more freely.
